John Cale, 08/02/85, Sleep Out Louies, Orlando, FL

From the Orlando Sentinel, 1994, August 28th, doing a story on local impresario
and owner of Figurehead Records, Jim Faherty.

Then there was John Cale, formerly of the legendary Velvet Underground.
The opening acts done. Were looking for Cale, who’s staying at the Park Inn
across (Lee Road) from Sleep Out Louies. Were banging on the door, but he
won’t let us in. We can hear him stumbling around in there. We get the manager
to open the door, and theres John Cale, laying there like a big cow. . . . He’s
wasted, screaming at some preacher on TV. Here we’ve flown this guy in, paid
him half up front and now he cant play.

Mo Tucker (also from Velvet Underground) was with us at the hotel. Cale’s all
happy to see her, and she helps us talk him into going back to the club. He
walks onto the stage using his guitar as a crutch. He starts every song beautifully
then stops and starts talking. Doesn’t finish a single song. I’m in the lobby ready to
cry I just know that everyone is gonna want their money back, and at the same
time Im thinking that’s Mo Tucker and John Cale! After the show, not a single
person asked for a refund.

"He was drunk off his ass, never completed a single song and spent most of the
evening lecturing the crowd about apartheid." - Chad
